Microsoft Acquires 3D Modeling Company

In an effort to improve the 3D component of their Virtual Earth project, Microsoft has announced its acquisition of 3D modeling company Caligari Corp.

Their biggest competition in this arena is Google Earth which seems to have quite a lead on Microsoft. Google Earth is the world’s most widely used cloud-based mapping software.

Surely Google is not sitting back waiting for Microsoft to unveil a product that would be an improvement over their product. It will be interesting to see Googles response to combat the threat posed by Microsoft.

3Dwalkthroughs.com believes the competition between these two giants will leads to advances in 3D technology that is beyond our wildest dreams. When you think of all the brain power that is being devoted to both Google Earth and Virtual Earth, the possibilities are scary.

We have also been hearing rumors coming out of Microsoft that they will soon be launching their own virtual world. We wonder if the improved 3D modeling capabilities resulting from Microsoft's acquisition of Caligari Corp will help to improve the graphics that can be supported by virtual world platforms. We certainly hope so...only time will tell.
